The best bricklaying trowel for bricklayers is not the same for everyone. Every bricklayer has their own preference based on working style, hand position and the type of projects they work on. However, there are certain models that are most commonly used by professional bricklayers in practice. In this article, we explain which trowels are popular, what to look for when choosing one, and which models we have tested ourselves on site.

The best trowel is often a personal choice

A trowel is the most important tool for a bricklayer. Because you use it every day, its shape and balance become very personal over time. Many bricklayers become attached to their trowel because, after long-term use, it gradually adapts to their hand. As a result, a familiar model often feels better and allows for faster and more accurate work.

Over the years, we have tested and used many different models in real working conditions. Based on this experience, we know that the “best” trowel mainly depends on the type of work you do, your bricklaying method and personal preference.

The traditional Arnhem model: most commonly used in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the Arnhem pattern trowel is the most commonly used model among professional bricklayers. This model offers a good balance between length, flexibility and control and is available in different sizes and from various brands.

The most commonly used size is:

180 mm trowel

This size offers a good balance between speed and precision and is suitable for daily use on site. This model is also available in our webshop in the 180 mm size.

Important things to consider:

  • there are right-handed and left-handed versions

  • always choose the correct model for your dominant hand

Sometimes bricklayers accidentally order a right-handed trowel while working left-handed, so make sure to check this carefully before purchasing.

Different handles and materials

Not only the shape of the trowel blade plays a role, but the handle is just as important. Different brands use different materials and handle thicknesses. You will find handles made of wood, rubber or plastic, and each material offers its own feel and grip while working.

Handle thickness can also vary. Some bricklayers prefer a thinner handle for more control, while others find a thicker handle more comfortable because it can reduce strain on the hand and wrist. Choosing the right handle is therefore often a personal preference and can be influenced by the size of your hand and your way of working.

Because you use a trowel every day, it is important that the handle fits well in your hand and feels comfortable during long working hours. Many bricklayers eventually choose the model and handle that best matches their own working style and experience.

English pointed trowels

There are also longer, pointed English-style trowels. These are widely used in some countries, particularly abroad and in the UK. In those regions, bricklayers often work with mortar placed on mortar boards rather than in mortar tubs. The longer, pointed shape of this type of trowel makes it easier to scoop and handle mortar from a board.

In the Netherlands, bricklayers usually work with mortar tubs. In combination with this working method, many bricklayers find the English model less practical. The shape and length do not always suit the Dutch way of bricklaying, which is why many professionals here choose other models such as the Arnhem pattern trowel.

The Smart bricklaying trowel

In recent years, more innovative models have been developed, such as the so-called Smart bricklaying trowel. This type of trowel is designed with ergonomics in mind, helping to reduce strain on the wrist and arm during work. It often has a different balance and shape compared to traditional models, which can make it more comfortable for some bricklayers when used over longer periods of time.

The Charleroi model: a rapidly rising favourite among bricklayers

A model that has recently been gaining popularity in the Netherlands is the Charleroi trowel. We use this model ourselves regularly in practice. It feels lighter and is slightly more compact. In many ways, it resembles a well-worn Arnhem pattern trowel, which means many bricklayers find it comfortable to use straight away.

Advantages of this model:

  • less strain on the wrist

  • feels lighter in hand

  • good control

  • suitable for both left- and right-handed bricklayers

  • unisex model

From our own experience on site, we’ve noticed that the Charleroi model is currently becoming increasingly popular among bricklayers in the Netherlands. While the Arnhem model has long been the standard, it appears that the Charleroi trowel is gradually gaining a larger share of the market and is more frequently becoming the preferred choice for many professionals.

Are you interested in the Charleroi model and would like to try it yourself in practice? You can view and order the Charleroi trowel directly in our webshop via the link below:

How a trowel wears into your hand

Many bricklayers notice that after long-term use, a trowel gradually adapts to their hand. The shape and balance change slightly over time, making the tool feel more natural and comfortable to use. That’s why many professionals stick with the same model for years. A trowel you’re used to often allows you to work faster and more comfortably.

What should you look for when choosing a trowel?

When choosing a trowel, consider the following:

  • size (usually 180 mm)

  • balance

  • weight

  • left- or right-handed model

  • handle type and material

  • handle thickness

  • personal preference

  • type of brickwork

A trowel should feel comfortable in your hand and be suitable for daily use on site.

Conclusion: what is the the best bricklaying trowel for bricklayers?

The best trowel for bricklayers is ultimately a combination of personal preference and practical experience. In the Netherlands, the Arnhem pattern trowel is still widely used, but newer models such as the Charleroi are becoming increasingly popular. The most important thing is to choose a trowel that feels right in your hand and suits your way of working.

We have tested various models ourselves and use them regularly in practice. In our webshop, you can find the Arnhem model in 180 mm as well as newer models such as the Charleroi trowel, which is being used more and more by professional bricklayers.

Our favourite model at the moment is the Charleroi trowel. Cutting bricks is a bit more difficult, but it feels great in the hand and is much lighter on the wrist.
